Ristocetin Cofactor Test
Introduction
The Ristocetin Cofactor Test is a vital diagnostic tool used to assess platelet function, particularly in patients suspected of having thromboembolic disorders. This test is crucial for determining the body’s ability to form clots and can help diagnose conditions that lead to excessive bleeding or thrombosis. Understanding the results of this test can guide treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes.
What the Test Measures
This test measures the ability of platelets to agglutinate in the presence of ristocetin, a specific cofactor. It assesses the functionality of von Willebrand factor, which is essential for platelet adhesion and aggregation. Abnormal results may indicate von Willebrand disease or other platelet dysfunctions.
