Fibrinogen Clotting Activity Test
Introduction to the Fibrinogen Clotting Activity Test
The Fibrinogen Clotting Activity Test is a crucial diagnostic tool used to assess the functionality of fibrinogen, a key protein involved in blood coagulation. Proper coagulation is essential for preventing excessive bleeding and ensuring proper wound healing. This test is particularly important for individuals who may be at risk for bleeding disorders or other coagulation-related issues.
What the Test Measures
This test specifically measures the activity level of fibrinogen in the blood, providing insights into the blood’s ability to clot effectively. Low levels of fibrinogen can indicate a risk for bleeding, while elevated levels may suggest a risk for thrombosis or clotting disorders.
Who Should Consider This Test?
Individuals experiencing symptoms such as unexplained bruising, prolonged bleeding from cuts, or those with a family history of coagulation disorders should consider undergoing the Fibrinogen Clotting Activity Test. Additionally, patients with conditions that may affect blood coagulation, such as liver disease or those undergoing anticoagulant therapy, may also benefit from this test.
Benefits of Taking the Test
- Identifies potential coagulation disorders early.
- Guides treatment decisions for patients with bleeding or clotting issues.
- Monitors the effectiveness of anticoagulant therapy.
- Provides peace of mind for individuals concerned about their blood health.
Understanding Your Results
Results from the Fibrinogen Clotting Activity Test are typically available within a day. A normal fibrinogen level indicates good clotting function, while abnormal levels may require further investigation or intervention. It’s essential to discuss your results with a healthcare provider to understand their implications for your health.

Sample Collection Instructions
For the Fibrinogen Clotting Activity Test, please provide a sample of 3 mL whole blood in a blue top (sodium citrate) tube. Mix thoroughly by inversion and transport to the lab within 4 hours. If transportation is delayed, make platelet-poor plasma (PPP) within 1 hour of collection by centrifuging the sample at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes and transferring the supernatant to a clean plastic tube. Centrifuge this supernatant again at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes and finally transfer the supernatant (PPP) to one labeled, clean plastic screw-capped vial. Freeze immediately and ship frozen. Do not thaw.
